A replacement MSIC can be issued due to a number of reasons. It is important to know that if you require a replacement MSIC you must notify your Issuing Body of these circumstances. Penalties may apply if you fail to meet your obligations as an MSIC holder.

Replacement MSICs may be issued for one of the following reasons:

• lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed MSIC

• change of name

• visa renewal

• previously cancelled MSIC.

Lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed cards​

 

If your MSIC has been lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed you must notify your Issuing Body within seven days of becoming aware. The MSIC must be returned to the Issuing Body within 30 days if it has been damaged, altered or defaced (permanently or temporarily).

Failure to return your MSIC within 30 days is an offence worth 10 penalty units. As of July 2017, one penalty unit is worth $210. 

​

At your appointment you will be required to complete a statutory declaration detailing the circumstances of how the card was lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. Your statutory declaration must also state that since your background checks were completed, you have not been convicted of a maritime-security-relevant offence. If the MSIC was stolen, you must include a copy of the police report or any other information issued by the police.

Please follow Steps 1 to 7 to replace your lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed MSIC. 
 

Change the name on your MSIC

 

​​If you hold an MSIC and change your name, you must notify your Issuing Body of the change, in-person, within thirty days. This offence is worth five penalty units. As of July 2017, one penalty unit is worth $210. 

​

Your original MSIC ceases to be valid one month after the name change is made and must be returned to the Issuing Body. You must provide an original valid linking document showing the change between your names, for example a marriage certificate or change of name certificate. 

​

Note: A linking document must be an official document containing a registration number. For example, a 'Certificate of Marriage' signed on your wedding day is not acceptable however, a 'Marriage Certificate' registered through Births, Deaths, Marriages is acceptable.

At your appointment you will be required to complete a statutory declaration stating that since your background checks were completed, you have not been convicted of a maritime-security-relevant offence.

Visa renewal MSIC 

 

If you hold an MSIC which expired due to your visa expiry, you can apply for a visa renewal MSIC, provided you:

• hold a new visa entitling you to work in Australia, that was issued less than 12 months after the expiry of the old visa; and

• continue to have an operational need to hold the MSIC; and

• provide a statutory declaration stating that, since the expiry of the old visa, none of the information given in relation to the application for the old MSIC has changed.

Note: The replacement MSIC must expire on your new visa expiry date and cannot exceed the original validity period the initial background check (either two or four years).

​

GPC MSIC Issuing Body will verify your 'work rights' status online via the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system at your MSIC interview and are bound by the results produced. Please ensure that your visa details are correct within the VEVO system.

​

Your expired MSIC must be returned to your Issuing Body within 30 days. If you do not return your expired MSIC within this time frame, this offence is worth 10 penalty units. As of July 2017, one penalty unit is worth $210.

At your appointment you will be required to complete a statutory declaration stating that, since the expiry of the old visa, none of the information given in relation to the application for the old MSIC has changed. Your statutory declaration must also state that since your background checks were completed, you have not been convicted of a maritime-security-relevant offence. 

 

Note: You must provide proof of your new visa.

Previously cancelled MSIC 

 

If your MSIC was cancelled at your request but your circumstances have changed and you now have an operational need for an MSIC, you can apply for a replacement MSIC provided it is less than 12 months after the cancellation.

Note: The replacement MSIC will expire on the same expiry date of your original MSIC.

At your appointment you will be required to complete a statutory declaration stating that since your background checks were completed, you have not been convicted of a maritime-security-relevant offence.
