Containerised Freight

GPC Containerised Freight Initiative

The next major container terminal on Australia's east coast

Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is Australia’s premier multi‑commodity port, creating and facilitating prosperity for Queensland. Gladstone has become a gateway in Central Queensland for diverse industry including manufacturing, processing, trade, jobs, innovation and development. GPC has a strong commitment to facilitate new freight and trade opportunities including container freight.

GPC has a unique three-port footprint, managing and operating the Port of Gladstone, the Port of Rockhampton and Port of Bundaberg. The combined ports see approximately 2,000 ships call to transport over 34 major cargoes annually, totalling more than 120 million tonnes of product per annum.

To re-establish the container trade through the Port of Gladstone, GPC has commenced a project focusing on key customer service priorities. These are service frequency, transit time and total supply chain costs. Recent customer engagement by GPC highlighted a systematic approach is required to attract customer freight to support the start-up of container liner services. Shipping lines require customer freight to change their shipping schedules and include Gladstone port calls. Efficient container stevedoring services is also essential.

Without major projects for base load freight (e.g. LNG construction) and the seasonal nature of agricultural freight, existing Central Queensland import export (IMEX) customer supply chains and freight tasks must be understood and value-add opportunities identified. Understanding the customer freight needs and tasks in Gladstone and surrounding regions will encourage the shipping lines to undertake regular port calls and build IMEX container freight volumes. Customers who are seeking to grow their already significant container freight tasks will provide the building blocks for Gladstone Port operations in the future.

GPC has also been approached by stevedores interested in helping grow the container freight task to help establish ongoing container services at the Port. Critical to being able to operate efficient load/unload operations, is the establishment of an efficient crane capacity to maximise the number of lifts and TEUs exchanged per hour to minimise port turnaround time for the shipping lines.
