Fish

The estuaries and waters in Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) Ports of Gladstone, Rockhampton and Bundaberg are home to a variety of fish, from the smallest kinds of bait fish to some of the largest deep water fish species. These fish species are split into two groups, offshore and inter-tidal, based on their habitat. The following species are commonly found in our waters:​

​OFFSHORE SPECIES

​​Pelagic (fish that live near the surface of the ocean)
 

  • Spanish mackerel

  • Cobia

  • Tuna

​Demersal (fish that live on the bottom of the reef)
 

  • ​ Red emperor

  • Grass emperor

  • Spangled emperor

  • Coral trout

  • Fingermark

  • Cod​

​INTER-TIDAL SPECIES

​

  • ​Barramundi

  • Bream

  • King threadfin salmon

  • Blue threadfin (Blue salmon)

  • Mullet

  • Grunter

  • Flathead

  • Mangrove jack

  • Black jewfish

  • Gold spot cod​

GPC recognises the importance of their habitats for the reproduction and survival of many indigenous, commercial and recreationally targeted fish species, and has committed to investigating fish habitat areas (FHA) in the Central Queensland region under our Biodiversity Offset Strategy​. The FHA network encourages boating and fishing, but limits development activities that can cause physical disturbance to fish habitats.
